Florida officials are on their way to California to “throw the book” at the truck driver involved in the illegal u-turn crash on the Florida Turnpike earlier this

On Wednesday, August 20th, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that Lietenant Governor Jay Collins was on his way to California to extradite truck driver Harjinger Singh. Singh flew to California after the crash, and was arrested in Stockton, California on Saturday, August 16th. Singh reportedly entered the country illegally, and has been placed on an ICE detainer and charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.

“Tomorrow morning he [Collins] is going to take possession of this illegal alien, extradite him back to the state of Florida, and we are going to throw the book at him when he gets back here for what he did, so you can count on that,” DeSantis said,

If convicted in Florida, Singh faces up to 45 years in prison. Singh’s court appointed public defender has declined to comment on the case.

As of August 21st, the trucking company involved in the fatal crash, White Hawk Carriers out of Ceres, California, has had its insurance cancelled and its Common Carrier Authority revoked, according to the FMCSA. The company has a 23.4% OOS rate for its trucks, and a 13.4% OOS rate for its drivers. The national averages are 23.1% and 6.3%, respectively.

FOODIE CORNER

Smash a 6 Pack Smashburger Challenge

  • Location: The 76th Street Truckstop Diner in Byron Center, Michigan.
  • The challenge: Finish six double smash burgers within a 30-minute time limit.
  • Past performance: As of October 2024, the record for completion was 8 minutes and 18 second

This one I’m not really sure about on the food challenge, I frequented this place a lot years ago. I always stopped and had breakfast here sometimes 5 days a week when I was on a milk run for Mattel. The food was always great, while doing a little research on this place I found that a waitress that worked there ended up taking it over in 2014. Patricia Dunneback has done a lot of work to revamp this place and make it a wonderful truck stop again. She even opened another location in Coopersville,MI. Glad to see a business owner take pride in the trucking community to provide delicious food to everyone, especially drivers. Thank You Patricia and your family.
